New Play: The Colored Museum!

The Colored Museum
is a satirical play that gives a new meaning and perspective on being black in contemporary America. George C. Wolfe’s critically acclaimed play consists of eleven "exhibits" that re-explore and undermine stereotypes of what it means to be black. For example, the first exhibit, "Git on Board" is about the stereotype of the spiritual slave who does not rebel, but only trusts in the Lord. This lively and interactional play does not take place in a museum, but with characters using adult language to speak directly to the audience about black life throughout American history. The Colored Museum has made a delightful and discomfortable impression on many different people from diverse backgrounds.

George C. Wolfe’s The Colored Museum premiered in 1986, and years later, it’s still uproariously funny and often unsettling. Made up of 11 “exhibitions,” the play takes aim at stereotypes, self-loathing and assimilation within the African American community. While some plays don’t age well, Wolfe’s themes still resonate.
