The Third Annual Ron Walters Memorial & Symposium on Racial Justice and International Relations titled "The Global Impact of African American Culture and Politics" Date: November 13, 2012 Time: 9 AM - 1 PM Location: School of International Service Abramson Family Founders Room American University, 4400 Massachusetts Avenue Located at the corner of Nebraska & New Mexico Aves NW Washington, DC Speakers: Dr. Elsie Scott, Founding Director of the Ronald Walters Center at Howard University, Dr. Sujatha Fernandes, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the City University of New York and author of Close To The Edge, Dr. Theresa Runstedtler, Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of Buffalo; and author of Jack Johnson, Mr. Willard Jenkins, arts consultant, producer, writer on the subject of Jazz and author of The Autobiography of Randy Weston African Rhythms, Dr. Clarence Lusane, Program Director of the Comparative and Regional Studies Program in the School of International Service and author of The Black History of the White House, Dr. Gisele-Audrey Mills, Program Assistant for Undergraduate Studies at the University of Maryland and moderated by Ms. Camee Maddox, adjunct Professional Lecturer in the School of International Service. Dr. Ronald Walters (1938-2010) left a legacy of scholarship that examined the relationship between race and politics both domestically and internationally. Dr. Walters (SIS/MA, '66, Ph.D. '71) was the former chairman of Howard University's Political Science Department and director of the African American Leadership Institute at the University of Maryland. As an advisor to political leaders from Jesse Jackson to activists in South Africa, Brazil, Australia, and the United Kingdom, he wrote extensively on the politics of the African Diaspora, as captured in his award-winning book, Pan-Africanism in the African Diaspora: An Analysis of Modern Afrocentric Political Movements. This year's symposium will focus on the influence of African American culture and politics around the world, from arts including music to sports to political campaigns. The event will be organized in two panel discussions, focusing first on Hip-Hop and Jazz Music, then on Sports and the Global Obama Culture. Lunch for attendees is also included in the event.
